I've spent many months, er, years messing around with keyers and keys and radios and, well, ancillary appliances and appurtenances in my shack. In all that time, I haven't done much operating. Why not? Well, because I haven't had even a marginally useful antenna. I've been building a helically-wound vertical that I intend to make multiband by feeding it through an automatic tuner, but my attempt to raise it was a pretty spectacular failure and I've been discouraged since then, although I still intend to see if I can make it work I just haven't had the time or the energy.
antennas
Here's what I want in an HF antenna. I want a compact antenna that I don't have to put high up off the ground. I want a low radiation angle. I want something that works for lots of different bands. I want something that's easy to tune up. I want decent efficiency. I don't want ground radials or, well, ground anything.
A while back, I complained that I had misplaced my second copy of the Jerry Sevick's The Short Vertical Antenna and Ground Radial What I was trying to do was simulate one of the antennas that he had put in the book to see if I was getting a handle on NEC2. As an aside, I don't use EzNEC because I usually run Linux at home, not Windows, and EzNEC is pretty seriously a windows-only thing. I suppose I could get it to run under WINE, but I'm not really very interested in paying money for a product that could be rather difficult for me to use.
