Compact antenna update

I am attempting to create whole-band antennas for 80m and 160m that will actually fit on my yard. NEC2 says that a particular design will definitely work, but having built a 10/12m scale model of the larger antenna, well, it doesn't work. I'm going to be investigating why. I hope it is because I made a construction error.

My Yaesu FT-102

About a year ago, on March 30, 2012, an acquaintance of mine, Don Culbertson K5LDD died. Although he had had cancer, my understanding is that he died of a heart attack. Since he had been sick, he had discussed with his wife who was to help her dismantle his ham shack, their home network, and various related things, and the person that he suggested help her with it was me.

XR0ZR DXPedition to Juan Fernandez Island

XR0ZR will be QRV from Juan Fernandez Island sometime in late 2013. The Web site is under development. It's got a countdown on it now that ends on July 27, but I expect that it'll be updated as soon as there's something to put on it.

Juan Fernandez Island is in the South Pacific off the coast of Chile.


Antenna stuff, but not "Dipoles part 2"

A while back, I complained that I had misplaced my second copy of the Jerry Sevick's The Short Vertical Antenna and Ground Radial What I was trying to do was simulate one of the antennas that he had put in the book to see if I was getting a handle on NEC2. As an aside, I don't use EzNEC because I usually run Linux at home, not Windows, and EzNEC is pretty seriously a windows-only thing. I suppose I could get it to run under WINE, but I'm not really very interested in paying money for a product that could be rather difficult for me to use.

The Dipole Antenna - Part 1, Introduction

An antenna is an energy conversion device. It converts electrical current to and from electromagnetic radiation. I've been thinking about how antennas work for a while now, and I've been meaning to write down some of those thoughts. This has been driven, in large part, about questions that I had about why you could use a center fed dipole on the fundamental frequency or the third harmonic, but not the second harmonic.

80m pileup heard

After months of wondering if anyone was using 80m at all, and finally shifting the frequency of my Ft. Tuthill 80, I have at long last heard strong signals aplenty. I must have copied at least two dozen calls around 3.530 MHz all frantic to work somebody. Unfortunately, I don't know if I could hear that other station or not. I certainly didn't copy any call that I would think would be rare.

I conclude from this that my antenna needs improvement. Since I already knew that and am planning to do something about it, that's a convenient conclusion.

Update to my Ft. Tuthill 80

I finally figured out that tuning the Ft. Tuthill from 3560-3600 (or thereabouts) put me higher in frequency than most of the people who are operating 80 meters these days. Since I'd lost the additional components that came with the kit, it took me a while, but I bought some 33pF capacitors at Fry's (and the guy there in the aisle who was looking at resistors told me about Tayda Electronics which is an amazingly cheap place to buy electronic components.
